Bonnyrigg White Eagles found some long-lost form in front of goals last Saturday night. Ray Miller inspired the White Eagles to a confidence-boosting 4:2 win against high-flying Rockdale City.
A dominant start from Bonnyrigg paid early dividends. Ken Chun finished an excellent passing phase with a one-touch strike inside 15 minutes to open the scoring.
The home side continued to play great football. The White Eagles pressed and probed, with Chun and Ray Miller pulling the strings in midfield.
Chun provided the assist for Bonnyrigg’s second on 37 minutes. He delivered a corner which was flicked on at the near post by captain David Vrankovic. Vrankovic’s flick deceived everyone, going in at the far post to make it 2:0 heading into half time.
The old adage that 2:0 is a dangerous scoreline proved to be just that.
Bonnyrigg came out in the second half with their foot completely off the pedal. Rockdale City punished the home side, who looked completely disinterested in the early parts of the second half.
Ten minutes into the second half, former White Eagles Alex Canak pulled one back after Bonnyrigg’s defence were caught completely napping. Seven minutes later, it was all square as Toufic Alameddine scored his side’s second.
The tension was in the air for the home fans as for the second week running, they’d seen their side give up the lead.
Ray Miller was determined not to let the game slip away. He ducked and weaved and exerted his dominance as his teammates became inspired by his efforts.
Miller was rewarded for his determination. He dribbled the ball forward and unleashed a superb curling effort past Rockdale City’s goalkeeper David Bradasevic. Bonnyrigg were back in front and the momentum looked to be back in their favour.
The visitors woke themselves but their hard work in chasing another equaliser was undone by one of their own.
Gloveman Bradasevic threw the ball out poorly and it was a substitute Robbie Younis who profited. Younis, who has struggled up front this season, tucked the ball away from just outside the box to seal an important win for Bonnyrigg.
Rockdale’s player-coach Paul Reid expressed some disappointment with the result. “The boys fought extremely hard to get back to 2-2 so to give away two soft goals from that point on is incredibly frustrating, especially to come all the way here and leave with nothing,” he said. “It’s not a massive setback in the context of our season, we’ve played twelve matches and lost twice and we’re happy with the position we’re in”.
